Change Management

Things got quiet around here. The reason is that many things are changing in my life at the moment.

There’s the little being that’s growing inside Carolin and inside our hearts. It’s now started to kick and I can’t help but be totally amazed that it’s a new human that I can feel with my hands. Next week, there’s a new doctor’s appointment where we’ll be able to see our little one on the ultrasound device. I’m so excited!

So, Carolin and I are now preparing to be parents. Mentally, we’re just bundles of joy. There’s no reason to worry and I hope that it stays that way. We have to think of the things that have to be taken care of, though. To find out what these things actually are, we attended some informative talks at Profamilia. We’re also starting to buy things — the first clothes and diapers already are in the baby cupboard.

And if that wasn’t enough, my situation at work has changed as well! We’ve been planning to restructure the system administration department for months and now our plans are becoming reality. What has been a bundle of ten or so teams whose responsibilities were scattered all over the map now becomes a division of a few departments with clearly focused field of responsibility; each department consisting of about 4 or 5 teams. And I have been appointed manager of one of those departments: I’m now “Head of System Administration Core Services” which means that I’m responsible for central IT services like system monitoring, many Terabytes of backup data as well as database and storage administration. It’s a big challenge to provide those services, not only because the teams still have to be assembled from existing IT employees and newly hired ones.

All that has pretty much taken over the time I used to use for blogging. But I’ll try to increase my blogging frequency again by reporting from my new adventures leading a future father’s life and a crowd of IT guys.
